MONASTERY MONDAY

Midbar Yehudah - the Judean Desert. 313 CE - Constantine and Lucinius sign the Edict of Milan declaring tolerance in the Roman Empire - no more Christian martyrs. A good thing, right? But even good things require adjustment. How does a Christian commit the totality of his/her devotion without persecutions? Go to the desert! 65 Byzantine Monasteries in the Judean Desert. Pictured: the water cistern at the Euthymius Monastery.

Kasr-al-Yahud - the spot where Christian tradition places the crossing of the Jordan by the Israelites with Joshua, Elijah's ascension to heaven in the chariot of fire, and the baptism of Jesus.
